Yonkers: History and Heroes
Yonkers has a very long history. We have been at the forefront of worldly inventions, we have had many famous people rise from the hills of Yonkers and at the same time we have seen some wicked times. This Sunday, August 16, HBO will be airing the first of 6 episodes of a miniseries that tells the story of Yonkers’ housing desegregation case of the 1980’s. The show is called Show Me A Hero and it takes a look at the life and death of former 28 year old mayor Nick Wasicsko. The show takes a look not only at Mayor Wasicsko’s life, but the life of other Yonkers politicos who managed both their political careers while the same time obeying, and some not, Judge Sands and his ruling Yonkers. This was a tough time for everyone who lived in Yonkers.
On Tuesday, August 12th, Nick, Jackie and I had the opportunity to attend HBO’s NYC Premier of Show Me A Hero in Times Square. As we served our Yonkers Lager and IPA (thank you for the opportunity HBO) some very fortunate actors had the chance to be in our presence. To name a few- Samuel L. Jackson, Winona Ryder, Spike Lee, Jim Belushi, Peter Riegert, Bruce Altman, and David Simon, to name a few. On Wednesday, we then had the chance to watch the first two hours with so many of the real life characters depicted in the series. I look forward to the next 4 hours of story to be told.
