DAVE HARTMANN, BREWMASTER
In early 2017, 25-year brewing veteran Dave Hartmann took the reins at Yonkers Brewing Co. as Brewmaster. Along with his expertise and knowledge Hartmann brings recipes that have won numerous awards at the Great American Beer Festival (GABF), the World Beer Cup and other festivals and competitions.
The Early Years
Dave was introduced to homebrewing by one of his professors at RPI in Troy, NY. At the time, the local pub Holmes and Watson became his go-to haunt, where he was introduced to great—and mostly imported—beer. The experience encouraged Dave to start brewing in the basement of the house with a friend.
In 1992, Dave joined the Long Trail team as "chief scientist." After brewing for a year and a half, he was convinced... brewing is for him. He enrolled in the UC Davis Master Brewers Program and received his accreditation in 1994, all while brewing for Sudwerk in Davis, CA during his "spare" time.
After gradating, Dave moved backed to the east coast, joining Empire Brewing Company (Syracuse, NY) as head brewer. He helped the startup grow, opening brewpubs in Rochester and Buffalo. In 2000, he left the company to brew beer for the Times Square Brewery at 42nd St and Broadway in NYC.
Dave brewed a bit in Minneapolis, before traveling to Germany to tap into some beer culture and trace him family lineage. Somewhere in northern Bavaria in a town named Wuergau, Dave discovered a family run brewery - Brauerei Hartmann - where spent five months honing in his lager brewing skills.
Long Trail Brewing
Dave returned to the States in late 2009, reconnecting with friends at Long Trail Brewing (Vermont), a big regional brewery making about 85,000 barrels of beer annually. In 2011, he became Brewmaster. They purchased Otter Creek Brewing that year, and the combined companies grew to produce approximately 135,000 barrels by 2016.
Yonkers Brewing Co.
In 2017, Dave returned to his small-brewery roots, taking the Brewmaster position at Yonkers Brewing Co. “I saw a huge opportunity with Yonkers Brewing and it was the perfect time to join the team. When I first met with team YBC their passion for the city, for the craft and for growing the business was exactly what I was looking for.”
